Summary

New York Times bestselling graphic novel!

The Joker has been murdered。 His killer is a mystery。 Batman is the World's Greatest Detective。 But what happens when the person he is searching for is the man staring back at him in the mirror?

THE JOKER IS DEAD。

There is no doubt about that。 But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery。

Problem is, Batman can't remember。。。and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more he starts to doubt everything he's uncovering。

So who better to set him straight than。。。John Constantine?

The problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people's heads even more。 So with John's "help," the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered the Joker。

Batman: Damned is a groundbreaking supernatural horror story told by two of comics' greatest modern creators: Brian Azzarello (Dark Knight III: The Master Race, 100 Bullets) and Lee Bermejo (Hellblazer, Joker)。

This hardcover volume collects Batman: Damned #1-3 and features a behind-the-scenes extras gallery with an afterword by Brian Azzarello。

NOTE: Enhanced cover will only be on first printing copies!

Oi, where to begin with this inaugural series in DC's Black Label imprint。I'll start with the good, though。The illustrations by Lee Bermejo are stunning and detailed。 It reminded me of Alex Ross。I did enjoy the alternate versions of the Justice League Dark members。 Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine all make appearances。 Etrigan is the most intriguing, recast here as an underground rapper。 Swamp Thing is always interesting。 The rest, though, just get visu Oi, where to begin with this inaugural series in DC's Black Label imprint。I'll start with the good, though。The illustrations by Lee Bermejo are stunning and detailed。 It reminded me of Alex Ross。I did enjoy the alternate versions of the Justice League Dark members。 Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine all make appearances。 Etrigan is the most intriguing, recast here as an underground rapper。 Swamp Thing is always interesting。 The rest, though, just get visual makeovers more than any real character changes。Perhaps the best part of Batman: Damned is the notion behind why the series is titled "Damned" in the first place。 This concept isn't spoken aloud until the last issue。 Perhaps more astute readers pick up on it earlier, but when I read it, it actually kind of blew me away。 So, I give credit to Brian Azzarello for that。Now, unfortunately, on to the not so good。The description proclaims "New York Times bestselling graphic novel"。 I wonder how much that had to do with the uproar over the first issue featuring Batman's penis。 And while I can get over such an asinine stunt, it's endemic of the series overall problem。Writer Brian Azzarello and illustrator Lee Bermejo go out of their way to make sure the reader knows this is an "adult" book。 Batman's wang is the start, but the sexualized depiction of Zatanna and utter trashing of Thomas and Martha Wayne drag the story downhill。 Sure, Zatanna is usually wearing tight clothes, including fishnets, but do you have to include a prominent wedgie shot? And this alternate vision of Bruce Wayne's childhood is so at odds with the traditional one that it was very hard to swallow。 The scenes with Thomas and Martha were probably more upsetting to me than any of the Batman action。I adore the character John Constantine。 Here he plays Virgil to Batman's Dante。 That's a necessary character such an arc as Batman takes in this series, but it means Constantine doesn't really do much。 He has no real impact on anything。 He's pretty much here just to play narrator for the reader。 And most of that narration doesn't amount to much。I said earlier I liked Lee Bermejo's artwork。 But I also have the same problem as I do with Alex Ross' artwork。 The detailed paintings aren't all that dynamic。 Each panel feels static。 And the few times some normal comic book art is added, such as blood on Batman's chest, it looks extra cartoonish。 Even the sound effects overlaid on this art style look out of place。 It's why someone like Greg Horn sticks almost exclusively to comic book covers rather than interior art。This was an inauspicious start to DC's Black Label imprint。 Fortunately, later series live up to the imprint's promise of mature stories without stooping to the stunts pulled by Batman: Damned。 。。。more

I want to start by saying that the artwork in this graphic novel was extraordinary。 The high quality details made it look like scenes from a movie, plus the dark style and interpretations of the characters were super creative and again, ultra detailed。But MY GOD the writing was tough to get through。 I’m telling you it was probably easier reading Shakespeare than some of the sentences in this novel。 I’m not sure what the writer was trying to do with this vague poetry like style but for the whole I want to start by saying that the artwork in this graphic novel was extraordinary。 The high quality details made it look like scenes from a movie, plus the dark style and interpretations of the characters were super creative and again, ultra detailed。But MY GOD the writing was tough to get through。 I’m telling you it was probably easier reading Shakespeare than some of the sentences in this novel。 I’m not sure what the writer was trying to do with this vague poetry like style but for the whole novel he was saying a lot and not saying much at all。 It ruined what had the potential to be a very interesting story as Batman seems to battle with his memories & past actions。 Plus it was pretty cool to see characters such as Constantine, Enchantress and a new look Harley。 But yeah, lots and lots of potential and I’d love to see more comics in this art style but If the writing remains like this then my rating will probably remain low。 。。。more

The story is a mess, but the artwork is phenomenal。

I guess I’ll start with what I actually enjoyed。 And that’s basically Lee Bermejo’s artwork。 The artwork was stunning ! Ive always been a fan of Bermejo’s work but I have to say this is probably my favorite work from him。 It’s just sad to say the story isn’t the best。 Lee did not have to go off as hard as he did but every page was exactly what it needed to be in the moment。 Breath taking。 Now to the story。 Haha I don’t know if it’s just me but I really don’t understand what I read。 First off Bri I guess I’ll start with what I actually enjoyed。 And that’s basically Lee Bermejo’s artwork。 The artwork was stunning ! I don’t care what any bad review said。 I loved it! Maybe not typical Batman but I was looking for a good horror。 The art was amazing and creepy。 Awesome story!

This was a twisted, dark ride。 I know, saying that about a Bats book may be redundant, and yet I'm going to say it。The Gaiman influence in this was allll over the place。 It's like Books of Magic and Black Orchid (Gaiman's version) were put in a blender with All-Star Batman and The Killing Joke。The artwork was amazing。 I'm still sitting with some of the storyline, and will have to reread。 This was a twisted, dark ride。 I know, saying that about a Bats book may be redundant, and yet I'm going to say it。The Gaiman influence in this was allll over the place。 It's like Books of Magic and Black Orchid (Gaiman's version) were put in a blender with All-Star Batman and The Killing Joke。The artwork was amazing。 I'm still sitting with some of the storyline, and will have to reread。 。。。more

A grim yet amazing horror story set within the gritty world of Batman, the partnership between Constantine and Batman is a welcome addition to the Dark Knight’s tale。 This Elseworld style story sees some of Gotham’s and DC’s magical world in some new light, and the shocking loss of The Joker sends Batman down a hellish road that breaks into some of the amazing horror tales that DC Comics houses。 A must-read miniseries。

Some of my favorite artwork I’ve seen in a graphic novel, Batman or otherwise。 Loved how it leans into the gothic horror and fantasy elements that exist in Batman’s world and delivered a special story。 Definitely not the easiest to make sense of but sometimes in a good way。 I’ll definitely be seeking out other works by this author and artist and would highly recommend Damned to comic fans, especially fans of dark and offbeat styles。

I'm guessing there are a lot of recommended orders for how to read the seemingly endless amount of Batman content out there, and I doubt many of them suggest just getting whatever happens to be at the library when you stop by, but here we are。 I found this harder to follow than the others I've read。 There were a few characters unfamiliar to me (either entirely or at least in a Batman setting) who played important roles and it was clear that the reader was expected to know plenty about them。 The I'm guessing there are a lot of recommended orders for how to read the seemingly endless amount of Batman content out there, and I doubt many of them suggest just getting whatever happens to be at the library when you stop by, but here we are。 I found this harder to follow than the others I've read。 There were a few characters unfamiliar to me (either entirely or at least in a Batman setting) who played important roles and it was clear that the reader was expected to know plenty about them。 The art was good, but the content came from too many different unknown directions for me to properly follow this one。 。。。more

Despite being a so-called “stand-alone sequel” to their pretty great 2008 Joker comic, Batman: Damned is probably best known for one thing and one thing only; giving us a peek at Batman’s c***。 Why they deemed it necessary to include in the first place I don’t know, but it got so controversial that DC eventually decided to edit it out。Anyway, Damned picks up right after Joker。 Batman wakes up seriously wounded in an ambulance and he soon learns that Joker has been found dead in the river under t Despite being a so-called “stand-alone sequel” to their pretty great 2008 Joker comic, Batman: Damned is probably best known for one thing and one thing only; giving us a peek at Batman’s c***。 Why they deemed it necessary to include in the first place I don’t know, but it got so controversial that DC eventually decided to edit it out。Anyway, Damned picks up right after Joker。 Batman wakes up seriously wounded in an ambulance and he soon learns that Joker has been found dead in the river under the bridge they fought on earlier。 Unfortunately, he can’t remember more than being on that bridge。 Did Batman himself actually kill Joker this time, or did someone or something else? With the help (or whatever you wanna call it) from John Constantine, Batman sets out to unravel this mystery。Whereas Joker was pretty much narrated by one of his henchmen, Damned is narrated by Constantine, and yes, his involvement means that the story takes us into the supernatural areas of the DC universe。 One thing I never really got in the story, though, are the flashbacks to Bruce’s childhood, and Enchantress role in them。 Quite frankly, I didn’t really get the sudden ending of the series, either。Either way, I don’t think Batman: Damned is nearly as good as Joker, and I even found it to be a little dull at times。 The hands down best part about the series is Lee Bermejo’s art, which I think is even better here than it was in Joker。 The art in Joker had two types, both great, but one better。 Damned only consist of the better one。 If you’ve read Joker, which I recommend, you might know what I’m talking about here。But, in short, I find this to be an unnecessary, inferior (and overpriced) sequel not worth reading, whether you’re a fan of Joker or not。Rating: 2/5 - Mediocre 。。。more

Well, there were certainly some choices made in this one。Though there are some good ideas here, the whole book ultimately felt confusing, disjointed, and fundamentally untrue to the characters, especially the of Batman and his parents。 The art is amazing though I don't necessarily dig some of the new takes on character design (Harley looked stupid, but on the opposite side I really dug Deadman in this)。The ending REALLY didn't work for me-- I feel like there was no logic in Batman's decision at Well, there were certainly some choices made in this one。Though there are some good ideas here, the whole book ultimately felt confusing, disjointed, and fundamentally untrue to the characters, especially the of Batman and his parents。 The art is amazing though I don't necessarily dig some of the new takes on character design (Harley looked stupid, but on the opposite side I really dug Deadman in this)。The ending REALLY didn't work for me-- I feel like there was no logic in Batman's decision at all。 。。。more
